Attention airsoft enthusiasts, rookies, and seasoned players alike! Have you ever found yourself lost in the seemingly never ending labyrinth of airsoft rifle options, wondering which one is the perfect fit for your tactical adventures? Stuck between whether you should buy a super advanced high-end AEG for field domination or a hyper-realistic Gas Blowback Rifle for one-to-one training? The world of airsoft might be teeming with choices, but today, we're going to break down some facts and opinions to help that impossible decision seem a little more possible. Specifically, we're going to dissect and analyze the world of Gas Blowback Rifles (GBBRs), and hopefully help you decide whether these realistic replicas are right for you!

This will be your exclusive backstage pass to understanding if Gas Blowback Airsoft rifles are your ticket to airsoft nirvana. Taking knowledge from the many airsoft minds here at Evike.com, we'll dive into the intricate mechanisms that power these marvels, dissect the benefits, and candidly discuss the drawbacks.

Time to Go Gas

Goal Assessment. Realistically, what do you hope to achieve with a GBBR?

Defining your airsoft objectives is the first step on this path of enlightenment. Are you a dedicated marksman, seeking precision and realism? Or perhaps you thrive in fast-paced skirmishes, craving the adrenaline rush of rapid firefights? Your airsoft goals serve as the compass guiding you toward the ideal choice.

For the dedicated Marksman, are you prepared for your rifle's velocity to be held variable to the days temperature?

For the close quarter speedy skirmisher, are you okay with not having nearly as much ammunition to blast off at once without the need for a reload?

Is the immersion of recoil, realistic controls, and ammo capacity worth the disadvantage you'd be placed at by choosing to do so? While these downsides seem scary, plenty of airsofters have a blast running gas blowbacks anyway. Perhaps laying waste to your opponents with an overtuned AEG or HPA rifle that you've spent nearly a grant on is too cheap for you, and you wish to find victory held to the challenge that realism brings. Maybe you're simply someone who rather bask in the experience of being a soldier on the battlefield rather than concern yourself with how many eliminations you've claimed that day. Regardless of your reason, by going with GBBRs you've elected to play airsoft on Veteran difficulty, and that's a-ok!

Q: If someone told you they wanted to get into gas blowback rifles, what would you tell them?

A: Is this your first gun? If yes, then you should probably pick up an AEG instead. If no, then go for it! But please do make an informed decision on which one to choose. - Steven M. from Evike Superstore

A: If you're going to field it, be prepared to invest a lot more compared to an AEG of similar reliability. - Jesse H. from Evike Superstore.

However, it's not as simple as picking up your favorite replica in it's GBBR variant and taking it straight to the field. Gas Rifles require a multitude of purchase considerations and accessories to really be a viable option for your next game. In our next section, we'll overview what those those considerations might be.

What accessories will I need in order to run a Gas Blowback Rifle?

By taking the step in the Gas Blowback world, you're entering a realm where the proper supplies and accessories can be critical to your experience. Here's a breakdown of the accessories you'll need to ensure your Gas Blowback Airsoft Rifle performs at its peak:

Silicon Oil: Your trusty sidekick for maintaining the rifle's longevity and functionality. Silicon Oil is essential to keep the seals lubricated, ensuring a smooth and reliable gas flow with each shot. Some aficionados swear by PTFE grease, especially for lubricating metal-to-metal contact points, as it boasts impressive longevity. The choice ultimately boils down to whether you prefer silky-smooth operation (Silicon Oil) or extended maintenance intervals (PTFE grease). Even our techs who work side by side at Evike.com have different preferences when it comes to which lubricant to use.

A: The problem is: Gas tends to spew everywhere on gas blowbacks. When that gas comes into contact with PTFE grease, it tends to get sticky. - Jose G. from Evike Tech.

A: I use primarily PTFE grease. With silicon oil, you can still feel some of that metal to metal contact, whereas PTFE is just smooth. White lithium is what I prefer most. - Tom from Evike Tech.

Our PTFE Recommendation: AIM Top Silicone Grease for Airsoft AEG & GBB Pistols & Rifles (Model: PTFE Grease)

Paper Towels: An often-underestimated ally in your arsenal. Paper towels are indispensable for routine cleaning and maintenance. Whether it's wiping off excess oil or cleaning dirt and debris from your rifle, these humble towels play a crucial role in keeping your firearm in top condition. Too much of that black gunk buildup in your rifle will shorten its lifespan, as it starts to become an abrasive paste that wears down your parts.

Hop-Up Adjustment Tool: Some GBBR platforms may require specific tools for adjusting the hop-up mechanism. Making sure you have the right one is critical, as it allows you to fine-tune your rifle's accuracy by controlling the trajectory of the BBs. Having the right hop-up adjustment tool ensures you're always on target.

Speed Loader: Don't let the excitement on the field fizzle out while you fumble with loading magazines. Gas Blowback Airsoft rifles often use low-capacity magazines, which means you'll need to reload more frequently. A specific speed loader tailored to your rifle's magazine design can make quick work of refills, keeping you in the game.

Additional Magazines: Gas Blowback magazines have limited capacity, typically holding fewer rounds than their AEG counterparts. To stay competitive and avoid frequent downtime, you'll want to stock up on extra magazines. Having multiple loaded magazines at your disposal ensures you can keep the BBs flying without missing a beat. Always remember: More shoot, more recoil, more fun.

What sort of maintenance will I have to do, and is it really that time consuming?

Contrary to what it might sound like, GBBR cleaning is not a super time consuming process for most systems. Once you understand what to clean and where to apply lubricant, the process can be quick and, for many, relaxing. The process will be different depending on what platform you have, but the core ideas should remain the same.

Lubrication: The heart of GBBRs lies in their intricate mechanical systems. To keep these systems running smoothly, lubricate all metal-to-metal contact points, especially the bolt. This step is vital for ensuring that your GBBR operates efficiently and reliably. A well-lubricated bolt minimizes friction and maximizes gas utilization, translating to better shots on the field. Keep in mind, lubricant will accumulate with dirt and metal shavings, requiring it to be cleaned out and re-applied as needed.

O-Ring and Magazine Maintenance: O-rings play a crucial role in sealing gas and preventing leaks. To maintain their effectiveness, always use Silicon Oil for O-ring lubrication. Applying a small amount of Silicon Oil to the O-rings in your nozzle and GBBR magazines will keep them in excellent condition, preventing leaks beginning to form. You can do this by pressing down the main valve and squirting a few drops down the gas router for the magazines. For the nozzle, bring it to full extension and squirt a drop where you see the O-ring.

Metal-to-Metal Contact: When it comes to metal-to-metal contact points, you have options. Silicon Oil is a popular choice for its smooth and efficient lubrication, while PTFE Grease is known for its long-lasting properties. Depending on your preferences and the specific requirements of your GBBR, choose the lubricant that suits your needs. A very conservative amount of PTFE is typically best for trigger sears (opinion check this)

Other than that, routine cleaning of the inner barrel will ensure your rifle is shooting as accurate as possible, but that rings true for all rifle systems. We recommend the (kit) for your inner barrel cleaning needs to ensure you don't accidentally scratch your inner barrel while cleaning it.

Alright, alright. It doesn't sound too bad. But is it really for me?

If you're still on the fence about whether a GBBR is right for you, here's some wisdom from some of us GBBR users at Evike.com that might aid you in deciding whether you should wrap up that order for a brand new gas rifle.
