Welcome to the world of Milsim West! Milsim West (Military Simulation West) is a prominent and recognized event organizer within the airsoft and military simulation community. Known for hosting large-scale, immersive military simulation events, Milsim West creates scenarios that mimic real-life military operations, allowing participants to uniquely engage with the hardships of war for recreational purposes. What sets Milsim west apart from other large-scale events is its intense non-stop 40 hour gameplay. That's right! There are no breaks at a Milsim West event! You're in the midst of a war and must do whatever it takes to survive not only the threat of your enemies, but the harsh reality of nature as well.
Attending a Milsim West event, especially as a beginner, can be a life-changing experience! Keep in mind, going into it underprepared can be life-changing in a negative way. Milsim West is not for everyone. Its strenuous and immersive gameplay is not for those looking for an easy, casual experience. But with the right tools, you might be able to survive a Milsim West weekend without too much damage! To ensure you are well-prepared, here’s a general list of items you should absolutely consider bringing.

Essential Airsoft Gear
Not just any ol' rifle will do for Milsim West. At a 40 hour event where you'll be falling, trudging through earth, and dealing with intense temperature fluctuations, you'll need a rifle adaptable enough to meet any obstacle of the elements. Moreover, you'll also need a rifle that fits your particular faction's guidelines! Here's a few of my top picks for Milsim-ready airsoft replicas!

Proper Uniform:
In order to maintain immersion, Milsim West has strict uniform regulations. Not only do these regulations maintain realism in the simulation, but they act as important signals in designating which team you're on. If your uniform is too similar to the opposing faction, confusion can arise, causing you to unintentionally become a target of your allies as well. More importantly, if you fail to meet proper uniform requirements, Milsim west might not let you play at all. Tickets are nonrefundable, so do your research and make sure your uniform is up to specifications! Here are some of my top recommendations for uniforms that can hold up to the rigors of Milsim West!

Sleeping Arrangements
Sleeping Bag: Find one appropriate for the weather conditions at your particular event. Avoid civilian colors if possible.
Tent: At Milsim West, there will be times where you will be forced to pack up and go as fast as possible. This makes tents highly impractical for fast pack up, and some events ban them all together. Check in with your event's regulations and decide whether your tent setup is feasible in the high speed action of Milsim West. If you can find a good quality bivvy, those work best!
Sleeping Pad: Sleeping bags don't insulate against the cold-hard ground very well! A sleeping pad will ensure you find some comfort during the little bits of rest you can get. I recommend the Evike.com Packable Ultra Lightweight Inflatable Camping Sleeping Pad (Color: OD Green)
Field Rations
Water: Keeping hydrated during these strenuous events is critical to staying in the game! Medic water bottles will be a searchable resource, so you can't rely on them as your main water source. We encourage bringing a hydration carrier such as the Condor MOLLE Style Water Hydration Carrier (Color: Black) for all your water related needs. Do remember that water isn't just for drinking!
Food: You're going to be burning quite a bit of calories while carrying around all that equipment. Proper meals will give you the energy you need to stay in the game. I've found the Mountain House meals to be particularly good for these types of events, though they do require a portable stove to be cooked with. Alternatively, good ol' military MREs work great as field rations, especially since they include warming packets to heat the meal with. Pack lots of non-perishable snacks as well!

Night Vision
There's no avoiding it: The nights of a Milsim West event are dominated by the use of NVGs (Night Vision Goggles). For the average airsofter, buying a night vision setup may cause your wallet to scream. There are rental options for the event, but it's still by no means cheap. If it's your first Milsim West event, don't feel entirely compelled to find night vision for the event. Play through the event as is, then decide if it's something you really want to pursue for your next event. Going into action with a functional set of NVGs can absolutely be one of the coolest things you can do at these events, but isn't necessarily a requirement to have fun!

Personal Items and Documentation
Don't have the proper paperwork filled out by the time you step onto the field? You won't get to play! Milsim West will send you an email with your waiver a week prior to the event. Make sure everything is signed and ready to physically be turned in at the meetup area!

Bags and Rucksacks
You'll need to pack quite a bit to survive a weekend at Milsim West. However, packing too much can be a poor decision. You will need to be able to hike with your rucksack filled with everything you're taking into the event. Once you get to your camp, you'll be able to set your main bag down, though a threat from enemy forces could force you to pack it all up again and get on the move. It is essential to practice quickly packing for this event! Ensure that your gear is comfortable and light enough to walk a mile or two with, or else you could be a burden for your squad. Keep in mind, your rucksack should be the color of your associated faction. Here are some of the main bags we recommend!
